Welcome to the Northern Writers’ Awards 2015

We’re delighted to now be welcoming submissions for the 2015 Northern Writers’ Awards, produced by New Writing North and supported by Northumbria University. This year we have £46,000 worth of support on offer for writers who live and work in the North of England.

The awards support writers of prose, writing for children, creative non-fiction, poetry, life writing, and for the first time this year writing for television. They support writers of all ages and our special Cuckoo Awards offer financial and practical support to young writers.

The Northern Writers’ Awards are produced by New Writing North, the reading and writing development agency for the North of England, and form part of our programme of work which is core funded by Arts Council England and other supporters.

The deadline for submissions is Monday 2 February 2015 at 5pm. Submissions must be made online and the full rules and eligibility requirements, as well as entry requirements for all the awards, are here.
Northern Writers’ Awards Roadshows: December and January
To launch this year’s application season for the Northern Writers’ Awards, we'll be touring to four northern cities to meet writers who are thinking of entering the awards, or who just want more information about them. They're free and you can get all the information and book here.

New in 2015
As well as our core cash awards and special awards, our innovative approach to developing partnerships has led to the creation of a number of exciting new opportunities this year:

Channel 4/Northumbria University Writing for Television Awards
A new award with Channel 4 and Northumbria University for writers interested in breaking into television drama. Two writers will win £3,000 bursaries to support them to develop their work.

Unbound Award
New Writing North is thrilled to be partnering with Unbound, the innovative crowdfunding publishing platform, which is transforming the relationship between writers and their readers. One of the winning writers from our 2015 awards will be offered the opportunity to use their award to launch their book with Unbound and to take it to market. Unbound are responsible for publishing bestselling and award-winning books such as Paul Kingsland’s The Wake and Shaun Usher’s Letters of Note.

New North Poets Award programme
The programme, partnered by The Poetry School, led by poet and tutor Clare Pollard, returns, offering up to six poets months of workshops and writing development, with a bursary that will cover all the associated costs of their travel, accommodation, tutoring and events.

Clare Swift Short Story Award
This exciting new award worth £1,000 has been created by friends and family of Clare Swift. It will be given to the best short story submitted. The award will be judged by journalist and former Independent on Sunday and New Statesman editor Peter Wilby. It is supported by the North East Chamber of Commerce working with Northumbria University.
