Free Speech Debate: Privacy and Surveillance
Wednesday 11 December, 6.30pm
In the wake of a public outcry at the Edward Snowden revelations, English
PEN brings together a panel of experts to debate the extent to
which our privacy has been compromised and what impact, real or imagined,
this has on the freedom of writers, journalists and bloggers.
Speakers:
Nigel Inkster, director of transnational threats and political risk at
the IISS. He served in
the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) from 1975 to 2006, and
spent seven years on the Board of SIS, the last two as assistant chief
and director for operations and intelligence.
Ian Brown, Associate
Director of Oxford University’s Cyber Security Centre, and Senior
Research Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII). His research is
focused on information security, privacy-enhancing technologies, and
Internet regulation.
Alan Judd, former
soldier and diplomat, and writer of nine novels and two biographies. His
first, A Breed of
Heroes, won an RSL award and another, The Devil’s Own Work won
the Guardian Fiction Award, and his biography of Ford Madox Ford won the
Heinemann Award. His authorised biography of Mansfield Cumming,
founder of MI6, was short-listed for the Westminster Prize.
