Frozen movie review

Frozen (2013) Poster

Went to the Insider 3D preview screening of the new Disney movie Frozen with my son this morning at Showcase cinema and what a lovely movie to view in the run up to the Festive season.

IMDB says: Fearless optimist Anna teams up with Kristoff in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

Elsa is a Princess with a flaw, she has magical freezing powers that she struggles to control and this leads to an estrangement with her younger sister Anna.  Elsa is voiced by Kristen Bell (When In Rome, Veronica Mars) and is at her best when freed of her constraints.  Anna, voiced by Idina Menzel (Enchanted and Rachel's mother in Glee) for me was the character I most enjoyed, though my son felt that Elsa was better, but that could have been because of her cool powers.  Kristoff, voiced by Jonathan Groff (The Conspirator and Jesse St James from Glee) whose career is in ice, joins forces with Anna and Olaf the snowman, voiced by Josh Gad (21 and Headphones from The Internship) who was magically brought to life by Elsa, to try and free the kingdom.

I thought the songs were very powerful, especially Let It Go, For The First Time In Forever and Do You Want To Build A Snowman, though for me In Summer somewhat interrupted the flow of the movie.

It has funny moments (who would have ever thought you would hear the word 'gassy' in a Disney song, or 'buggers' mentioned in a Disney movie?) and also tugs at the heart strings.

You can tell that it is from the makers of Tangled and Wreck It Ralph as the animation is very similar, especially the horses and the Princesses, though for me, I didn't think the film really needed to be viewed in 3D.  Be sure to stay for the end of the credits though, so you don't miss an extra scene featuring the snow monster.

Perfect family viewing at Christmas.                                                 8/10
