WCN Workshops, events and two job opportunities

We have three workshops, including a free Masterclass with Jean 'Binta' Breeze. We have news about our free manuscript appraisal service, Free Reads.  We have events featuring the likes of John Agard and some of the UEA's finest. What's more, we have two big job opportunities here at WCN. Translating the Poetry of the Holocaust: Two Workshops with Jean Boase-Beier

Discover the poetry of the holocaust, with an emphasis on translation, in this workshop from Jean Boase-Beier. You don’t need to be fluent in another language, just have an interest in poetry and translation.

Escalator Literature Writing Competition - Update
Escalator Literature won’t be opening in the Autumn as in past years – instead it’ll launch in 2014, in a slightly different incarnation to previous years. As always, keep an eye on our enews for more updates.

UEA Live is a new clubbish night from UEA featuring talented writers who are all graduates or students of their Creative Writing courses. A chance to hear some great writing and to mingle and make merry.

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s awards ceremony, a celebration of our region’s literature which will see six category winners announced, one of which will also be named as the overall East Anglian Book of the Year – bringing its author a £1000 prize. Tickets are £20, including a glass of wine on arrival and a 2 course sit down fork buffet. Congratulations to the 2012 Escalator Literature Winners
After a year of professional development, mentorship, support from their peers and lots of hard work, our ten talented genre fiction writers are almost finished with the Escalator Literature programme. They’ll be celebrating their achievements along with an audience of agents and publishers at Foyles in October. You can read extracts from their work and find out more about Escalator online.

Summer Reads
After a great summer of reading, events and book clubs, our Summer Reads programme has come to an end. If you missed our events with authors Sarah Hall and Jon McGregor or poet Kei Miller you can listen to recordings on SoundCloud. We welcomed Summer Reads 2012 author Juan Pablo Villalobos and his translator Rosalind Harvey to Norwich to celebrate the launch of his new book, Quesadillas. Rachel Ward blogged about the event

We have a new home on IdeasTap - an arts charity for young, creative people - as a partner organisation. Come and say hello.

26 for Norwich
26 for Norwich took 26 historic Norwich writers, paired these figures with members of the writers’ group 26 and UEA students and asked both the students and professional writers to compose a piece in response to the historic writer they’d been paired with. Visit the 26 for Norwich website to read their work, and find out more about the project in this blog from Sara Sheridan.

The University of East Anglia has two fellowships open for applications.

To celebrate UEA’s 50th anniversary, every writer appearing at the University of East Anglia Literary Festival this autumn has studied at UEA. Writers include Rose Tremain, Naomi Alderman, Andrew Cowan, David Almond, Charlie Higson, Anne Enright, Adam Foulds, John Boyne, Andrew Miller, Tracy Chevalier, Glenn Patterson, Ian McEwan and Sir Paul Nurse.   
       

The Wordsworth Trust are looking for a Poet in Residence.

The 2014 Commonwealth Short Story Prize will open on the 1st of October.

The Words and Women writing competition is open.

Wymondham Words Festival
will be taking place from the 21st-28th September.

Renowned poet Felix Dennis
will be at the Playhouse Theatre, Norwich on the 7th October.

The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education offers short and part-time courses to adult learners from all over the world, including literature and creative writing courses.

The Aldeburgh Poetry Festival
celebrates its 25th Anniversary with brilliant international poets in 56 events. Taking place on the 8-10th November, it promises to be the ultimate poetry weekend. Box Office : 01728 687100 or book online.
