INDUSTRIAL SCRIPTS NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 2013

Here is the latest newsletter from I. S. Screenplay Editors:

London Film Festival, Toronto, Venice & Awards Contenders

Venice kicked off the autumn festival season with a notable British win for Best Screenplay for Steve Coogan & Jeff Pope's Judi Dench starrer PHILOMENA. Limey luck continued in Toronto, as McQueen-Fassbender Part III (otherwise known as 12 YEARS A SLAVE) was the talk of the town and snagged the audience prize.

Attention turns to the 57th BFI London Film Festival, taking place across the capital from October 9th - 20th. Highlights include a double-dose of Tom Hanks in Paul Greengrass' CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (UNITED 93 on a boat?) and Walt Disney biopic SAVING MR BANKS. Clio Barnard steps into the fiction feature realm with THE SELFISH GIANT and Richard Ayoade's darker sophomore effort THE DOUBLE seeks to build on his reputation from everyone's favourite quirky Britcom SUBMARINE.

The season might be young, but reputation and buzz-building begins in earnest, whilst some hotly tipped favourites fall at the first hurdle (no Nobel prize for Julian Assange, no Oscars for THE FIFTH ESTATE). Combining the annual Weinstein and Streep awards juggernauts seems like a sure-fire path to success, and star-packed scenery-chewer AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY seems set to rack up the acting noms if not the best picture prize - but with a final edit yet to be locked down, that could all change.

Though these festivals may not have the marketplace power of Cannes, their importance as testing grounds for awards campaigns is vital, with millions of pounds of marketing-spend up for grabs to those who can prove they've got the legs to last the race - remember that when it comes time to applaud.

BFI Net.work announced

The BFI launches an exciting initiative to connect the various UK screen agencies and provide development funding and support for upcoming filmmaking talent. The Net.work scheme covers two strands - 'new' talent with little to no experience, and 'emerging' talent who may already have some industry traction (shorts, awards) but are yet to make their first feature.

A New TV Season Upon Us

As both DEXTER and BREAKING BAD draw to a close, new shows compete for our loyalty / bid to be the next neglected gem to be rediscovered at a later date on Netflix (why risk a show being cancelled, when the rest of the population can act as a testing device?). Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar team up for laughs in THE CRAZY ONES, IRONSIDE is resurrected with Blair Underwood in the wheelchair, whilst Christian Slater and James Spader join the ranks of movie-star turned TV actor for MIND GAMES and THE BLACKLIST (sadly not a dramatisation of everyone's favourite screenplays-to-watch collection). AVENGERS' spin-off AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D grabs the headlines, and starts the trend of superhero ancillary services on the small screen - BATMAN'S Commissioner Gordon is to receive his own spin off. Perhaps best of all is Michael J. Fox's return in - what else? - THE MICHAEL J. FOX SHOW.

***OUR NEW COURSE TO RUN FOR THE 2ND TIME: "EVERYTHING AMERICA"***

As regular followers of Industrial Scripts will know, our 1-day training seminars, "Effective Script Reading" and "Screenwriting for Beginners" have been running on a monthly basis for the past 3 and a half years.

98.5% of participants rated these courses "Excellent", so we thought it high-time to introduce a new 1-day seminar to the roster. Enter, stage right, "Everything America".

Designed for Producers, Writers and Directors with one-eye on working in the USA, ultimately the course does what it says on the tin: it delivers a vast amount of knowledge and learning to producers, writers and directors about every conceivable area of the US film and TV industry. The course is suitable both for those new to the industry looking to channel all their energies into a career in the US, and more experienced UK film professionals intending to make the move or begin dividing their time between London and LA.

The course ran for the first time in September to very positive feedback, and takes place again on SUNDAY 27th OCTOBER at a price of £156.99.

We only have 10 places on the course, and anticipate selling out, so if you're ever thinking of heading for Hollywood, or are just curious about how the systems work out there, come along to the course and in all likelihood it'll be the most valuable £156.99 you spend all year.

Industrial Scripts on the Road

With the last rays of summer disappearing, IS decided it was time to step-out from behind the pile of scripts and see what life is like away from Newman Street - if only a short hop to Regent Street. Over one hundred budding screenwriters attended our one-off course 'Writing Screenplays That Sell', with special Q&A session with a major Hollywood screenwriter to round things off. An insightful day, and lots of promising talent in the room.
