Bradford 2025: Nnena Kalu wins Turner Prize 2025

The Turner Prize 2025 has been awarded to Nnena Kalu. The winner of the £25,000 prize was announced last week at a ceremony at Bradford Grammar School presented by magician Steven Frayne, formerly known as Dynamo, in Bradford, this year’s UK City of Culture, and broadcast live on BBC News.

The jury awarded the prize to Nnena Kalu, who creates hanging sculptures from wrappings of different materials making cocoon-like shapes, as well as large-scale drawings made with vigorous, rhythmic lines. The jury commended Kalu’s bold and compelling work, praising her lively translation of expressive gesture into captivating abstract sculpture and drawing. Noting her distinct practice and finesse of scale, composition and colour, they admired the powerful presence these works have.

One of the best-known visual arts prizes in the world, the Turner Prize aims to promote public debate around new developments in contemporary British art. Established in 1984, the prize is awarded each year to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work. The shortlisted artists for 2025 are Nnena Kalu, Rene Matić, Mohammed Sami and Zadie Xa.

The exhibition of the four shortlisted artists is at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford until 22 February 2026. It is co-curated by Jill Iredale, Curator, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Michael Richmond, Curator, Yorkshire Contemporary, and Sophie Bullen, Assistant Curator, Yorkshire Contemporary, for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture.

The exhibition has been curated from an open call for submissions in response to the theme of OUR PLACE. Work has been submitted by anyone creating visual art – painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, film, textiles – whether they consider themselves professional artists or not. Responses to the theme have been varied and fascinating – creating an exhibition of diverse, bold and exciting work which we hope will inspire visitors and present an authentic vision of creativity in Bradford now.

Bradford Art Show is part of OUR TURN, a new visual arts festival for Bradford. This year’s exhibition is curated by independent curator and researcher Dr Kerry Harker.

Wandering Imaginations

Bradford 2025: Last chance to see - Wandering Imaginations

Closes 31st December 2025 | Times: 10am – 5pm, closed Tuesdays | Location: Brontë Parsonage Museum | Admission to the exhibition is free with a museum ticket.

This special exhibition at Brontë Parsonage Museum presents the four stories in audiobook form – accompanied by animations and illustrations created for Bradford 2025 by Fran Haslam, a Yorkshire-based artist, and Karen Kutame, an artist based in Ghana.

Latest Events, News and Opportunities

Wednesday, December 17th

Welcome to our last newsletter of 2025!  We know it’s only a week since our last one but we wanted to squeeze another one in before the Christmas break.

There are still plenty of festive activities to enjoy leading up to Christmas and throughout the holiday period, and for those who have had enough of the seasonal activities already or are maybe not too interested, we've included a few non-festive ones as well.

We would very much like to thank everyone who has added their events, news and opportunities to the website throughout the year and enabled us to fill our newsletters jam-packed full with creativity!

And thank you to those who read and share this newsletter and encourage family and friends to take part in all that's creative in Kirklees.

We wish you all a peaceful, fun and creative season and look forward to sharing lots of arts and creative activity with you in 2026.

We will be back with our next newsletter on Wednesday 7 January.
