Your monthly round-up of the best of our Magazine
December 2025
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Not here though – not so much as a stray bauble has rolled into the December issue of The Tonic. We’re sparing you the festive puns and cheap snow effects and sticking to what we know: sharing eight fascinating features to enjoy at your leisure.
Among this month’s octet are two pieces for poetry lovers; an insight into Inua Ellams’ creative process and a look back at past winners of the TS Eliot Prize. Plus, a couple of opportunities to discover new musical names, with a profile of composer Szymon Laks and a playlist of up and coming artists from this year’s futuretense series.
We take a tour of Gilbert & George’s 21ST CENTURY PICTURES in the company of performance artist Pandemonia, and break down this year’s Koestler Arts exhibition. And we nudge you in the direction of our classical music podcast series, So, Hear Me Out. But we begin in sensational style, with an entertaining interview with one of our Associate Artists, Conor Mitchell.
Around the winter holidays The Tonic is switching to the second Friday of the month, so look out for us in your inbox on Friday 9 January 2026.

With thanks to Hannah at Get Lost Yorkshire:
HeyOver the past couple of weekends, Christmas has taken on a slightly different feel for me. Instead of rushing around shops, ticking things off lists or feeling overwhelmed by choice, I found myself sitting in a candlelit cosy cabin at Wild Harvest School of Self-Sufficiency, spending a whole day learning how to craft eco-friendly Christmas decor from natural materials. And it was honestly one of the loveliest things I’ve done this season. By the end of the day my arms were full of homemade treasures including a set of three beeswax candles set into a traditional yule log, a willow-woven star, and a beautiful wreath for my front door made with local foliage. But the real takeaway wasn’t what I made… it was how I felt. There was something incredibly grounding about working with natural materials, chatting away with strangers, and realising how many festive traditions once revolved around using what we already had, not buying more. I left wanting to find one or two small switches each year to make Christmas a little more sustainable, without losing any of the magic. And that theme of handmade, slower-paced Christmas continues this weekend, because I’m heading back to Burton Agnes Hall for their beautiful Christmas display. If you’ve ever visited their gardens, you’ll know how much care goes into growing, drying and preserving their flowers and foliage, and at Christmas, all of that comes together inside the house. Their decorations are crafted almost entirely from materials grown in the walled garden, from dried flower garlands to intricate arrangements that fill each room with colour and texture. I visited a couple of years ago and was completely enchanted. It’s one of the most thoughtful festive displays in Yorkshire, especially if you love crafts, heritage and a quieter kind of Christmas. There’s something so soothing about stepping into spaces that celebrate creativity over consumption, where decorations are made, not bought; where natural materials are cherished; and where the season feels slower, more intentional, and full of heart. I can’t wait to return and share more with you soon. If you’re also drawn to a gentler, more sustainable Christmas this year, I’d love to hear what small switches you’re thinking of making. Until our next adventure, Yorkshire Events What's on in Yorkshire this weekend? Here's a glimpse of what's on in Yorkshire this weekend 👀 West Yorkshire: Saltaire Living Advent Calendar is here throughout December with festive windows brightening the village each evening. Enjoy creative displays that celebrate local spirit and seasonal charm. Find out more.
