Yorkshire Emerging Writers 2023 longlist announcement

So pleased and excited to be on the longlist for this amazing mentoring programme. I'd like to congratulate my fellow longlistees (listed below).

A trailblazing new mentoring programme specifically for unagented writers in Yorkshire from underrepresented backgrounds, YEW was created to discover new home-grown talent and are champion local writers from Yorkshire.

In its first year, the mentoring programme received many excellent submissions that between them offered a huge variety of local writing talent. Selecting the longlist was certainly no easy decision.

We are delighted to announce our amazing long-listed candidates:

Elizabeth Catherine for ‘Forgotten Picture Show’

Karen Naylor for ‘The Pallbearer’

Lauren Dixon-Smith for ‘The Shrouding’

Liz Champion for ‘Tramlines’

Maurice Carlin for ‘In a Quare Country’

Ruksana Abdul-Majid for ‘Parwa’

Nicola Fieldsend for ‘The Bachelor of Beaumont’

“It was such an honour to read the submissions for our Yorkshire Emerging Writers mentoring scheme. We were blown away by both the quality of the writing and the unique stories we read, making it an incredibly difficult decision to pick our longlist, so thank you to all the authors who applied.” Sara-Jade Virtue, Brand Development Director, Fiction for Simon & Schuster UK

“It was wonderful to have so many applications to the programme. For those not on the longlist we wish you all the very best with your future writing careers. We hope to see a lot more of you and look forward to following your progress.” Isla Rosser-Owen, Senior Creative Producer at Bradford Literature Festival.

The final list of mentees will be announced on Monday 8 January 2024.
