Seasons Greetings!

May your holidays be filled with cheer, warm memories... and maybe a winter walk in the Kent Downs!

Read on to discover our biggest achievements for 2023, choose the perfect Twixmas walk for you, and find out about the recent Secretary of State visit to the Darent Valley.

Our 2023 highlights

As we look forward to 2024, we wanted to share some of our highlights from 2023 with you. This year we are proud to have:

Twixmas Walks in the Kent Downs

Make the most of the break between Christmas and New Year, known as Twixmas, to enjoy some fresh air and spend time in nature.

Winter in the Kent Downs is a magical time, with the landscape transformed by frost and the atmospheric glow of low sunlight. Wildlife is often easier to spot in the winter months with less leaf cover for camouflage. Plus, the shorter days mean you don’t have to get up as early to watch the sunrise or stay out as late to see the sunset.

So, whether you’re looking to escape with (or without!) the family, or want to explore with your four-legged friend, we’ve got something for you.

Secretary of State visit to the Kent Downs

On Tuesday 28th November, we welcomed newly appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Barclay MP, to the Kent Downs to meet with farmers, project partners and the Kent Downs National Landscape team to talk about Landscape Recovery Projects.

The Minister visited Castle Farm in Shoreham to learn more about the Darent Valley Landscape Recovery Project. The project was launched as a pilot last year after we awarded the Darent Valley Farm Cluster a Farming in Protected Landscapes grant. The theme of the project is River Restoration, seeking to protect and restore the River Darent, a globally rare chalk stream facing many threats and challenges.

During the visit, the Minister announced a new package of measures.  These included launching a search for a new National Park, 34 new landscape recovery projects and funding to help more children get outdoors and into the great British countryside.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs

Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in the Downs? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this Christmas...

The Devil's Kneading Trough

The Devil's Kneading Trough is one of the largest and most famous steep-sided dry valleys that characterise the hills of the Kent Downs National Landscape.

It's often described as Kent's top beauty spot, boasting panoramic views over Romney Marsh and to the English Channel beyond.

The bowl-shaped valley, or coombe, was created at the end of the last ice age by melting snow and ice flowing down the chalk slopes.

The site is nationally important for its rare chalk grassland, supporting lots of rare plant species.

According to legend, if you walk around the Devil's Kneading Trough seven times then drink the water from the natural spring, you will see the devil!
