Durham Book Festival is your chance to get fresh inspiration and advice. At this year's festival, you can share your work with fellow Durham writers, or hear from master storytellers about how they approach their works-in-progress.
Plus for all aspiring children's book illustrators, we've partnered with Children's Books North to bring you interactive workshops and talks with some fantastic award-winning illustrators.
Durham Writes: Scratch Night North East writers are invited to meet each other and share their work at this informal, fun and supportive event. Think ‘scratch-night’ meets ‘literary salon’. There will be scheduled performances from Durham writers, readings and witty word games from host, master wordsmith, Adam Sharp, author of The Wheel is Spinning but the Hamster is Dead, and the opportunity for you to put your name in a hat for the chance to share your own work at the end! |

Picture Book Illustration Workshop with Dapo Adeola Transform your illustrations and create characters from all walks of life in this picture book illustration workshop with award-winning author and illustrator Dapo Adeola. Dapo will cover multiple aspects of children’s book illustration including colour, characters, composition and design in this practical and exciting interactive workshop, where you’ll also have the opportunity to receive feedback on your work. |
Meet the Illustrator: Sara Ogilvie Award-winning children’s book illustrator Sara Ogilvie will be sharing some practical advice for aspiring illustrators and reflecting on her career illustrating the beloved characters of authors including Julia Donaldson, Anna Kemp and Katherine Rundell. Sara Ogilvie is an award-winning illustrator and printmaker from Edinburgh based in Newcastle upon Tyne, where she also lectures in Illustration and Graphic Design at Northumbria University. |
