Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival

Enjoy even more crime themed events this Autumn with Harrogate International Festivals!

Salon North: Crime
Friday 25th September 2015
The Crown Hotel, Harrogate | 7.30pm

Join us as we delve into the relationship between crime and culture, looking in particular at representations of crime and criminals in all our favourite media. Diana Bretherick, practised as a criminal barrister and now is a criminology and criminal law academic at Portsmouth University, and will be on hand to put Criminal Myths under the microscope.

Vice President of the Forensic Science Society Lynda La Plante’s chief advisor Callum Sutherland is no stranger to the grittier side of crime. He spent over twenty years in the Metropolitan Police London as a Detective Sergeant on the Murder Squad and as a real-life Crime Scene Investigator. Understand the realities, pressures and sensibilities of solving the most serious crimes of all both at home and abroad from Callum’s first hand experience.

And as promised…Gin, Glorious Gin! Understand the role gin played in the criminalisation of Georgian women, in the clashes between classes in Victorian England, and how prohibition created the UK’s cocktail scene. This intimate focus, in conversation with Helen Bagnall and cultural historian Olivia Williams gives the lowdown on gin, glorious gin accompanied by the drinks that caused all the trouble. Could there be a better way to ingest history?

Cloaks, Daggers and Masked Maurauders

as part of The Harrogate History Festival

Friday 23rd October 2015

Cloaks and daggers are out of fashion in the twenty first century but you don’t have to step far back into the past for them to be right bang up to date.  Harrogate is home to the best of Crime Writing and here in the History festival, we have our own corner of historical crime bringing together some of the best loved names with stars of the genre, Robert Goddard, Michael Jecks, Shona MacLean and Andrew Taylor, chaired by Imogen Robertson.
