Over the past five years English PEN has tripled in size and impact, with successful campaigns promoting the freedom to read and write in the UK and around the world, as well as new programmes working with prisoners, refugees and other socially excluded groups. Our programme to support great literature in English translation has also recently expanded and we run public events and debates around the year that include writers and commentators from the UK and internationally.
Main responsibilities include:
  1. Developing and implementing an outstanding programme of creative writing workshops with disadvantaged communities in England and Wales
  2. Overseeing the direction of English PEN’s Writers in Translation programme
  3. Managing the programmes team
  4. Helping to raise and account for the funds to deliver these programmes
  5. Appointing and managing professional and freelance creative writing tutors and mentors as required

  3. Experience of successful people management
  4. Outstanding communication skills, both in writing and verbally
  5. Ability to interpret financial accounts and report with attention to detail
Personal competencies:
  1. Ability to engage with highly diverse groups of people, both with beneficiaries and funders at all levels
  2. Commitment to the issues affecting English PEN and its stakeholders in the literature and free speech sectors
  3. Creative imagination and flair; culturally engaged, particularly in the literature sector
  4. Able to work well as part of a team and with a range of partners
  5. Flexible and extremely well organised
