Another good meeting of the CWG tonight where N, P, D and I were in attendance.
P has set a short story writing challenge for the members with a set of three elements (from a choice of 10) that can be written in any genre and any POV. A suggested word limit of 1,200-1,500 words and an open deadline (we were thinking it can be done within the next three meetings) was given.
N shared his short story for children that he wrote for the Munch competition. We all really enjoyed it and loved the mix of characters (including Munch and a worried Princess) and the 'silver ball' surprise. It has a message and humour and I am sure it has a real shot at winning the competition - N has promised to let us know once he hears. It was lovely to hear more of N's work and it was so different from his more normal genre of sci-fi.
D then shared a story she has written for a competition inspired by the Illusionist Kemplar. It was a master class in illusion itself with an open ending and D will also let us know if she hears anything from the competition. D shared the competition details with the rest of the members, explaining that it is for an anthology with a picture of the illusionist on the cover - she admitted that the cover was so inspirational, she feels she could write many stories from this muse.
P revealed that she has been reading Nostradamus and this lead on to a fascinating discussion on the supernatural and fantasy.
I then shared the short sci-fi story that I have written for an anthology submission for stories that speculate on the future of agricultural engineering, farming and food production over the next century which has a deadline of midnight tonight. I wanted feedback on my piece before submitting it as sci-fi is not a genre I have tried before in a short story and I knew N in particular would be able to help. Thankfully it was well received (P even felt it was scary, but in a good way) and I have just sent it off to the competition. Fingers crossed.
D then shared three of her poems that she submitted and have been chosen to appear on a website. They were excellent and worked visually too, as the poems were set out on the page to encapsulate the themes.
The next meeting will take place on Monday 24 June 2013.
