Events and Activities in Bradford Libraries

Free Author Reading with Shahnaz Ahsan!

This Saturday 22nd November at Keighley Library - 2.30 - 3.30pm

Hosted by David Barnett

Come along this Saturday and join us to hear award winning author, columnist and food writer Shahnaz Ahsan talk about her memoir Jackfruit Chronicles - descibed as a love letter to family, food and Bangladesh.

Shahnaz is really looking forward to returning to Keighley Library - "the library where I spent hours and hours of my childhood, going there every day after school with my younger sister to wait for my parents to pick us up when they finished work. I haven’t been back in years and I am already filled with nostalgia."

Her book Jackfruit Chronicles is a tale of migration, love and identity told through one family’s recipes and their search for home. From curry houses to wedding feats to supper clubs, traversing borders from Bangladesh, Manchester, Keighley, London and Zimbabwe, The Jackfruit Chronicles is a heartfelt memoir that delves into the unique flavours and captivating history of Bengali food.

Beginning with the arrival of Shahnaz’s grandfather, Habib, in Manchester in the 1950s, this memoir not only focuses on the author's family story but also the broader narrative of the Bangladeshi diaspora, their struggles and their quest for a better life in Britain. Among the cultural divides and misunderstandings that affected the generations before her, Shahnaz beautifully weaves together her family's recipes and cherished memories; from an array of curries to vegetable delicacies and happy ending desserts, recipes include sour tomato broth, jackfruit kofta curry, lentil fritters, cardamom-infused vermicelli pudding, fish with clementine peels, and much more.

This event is free but booking is encouraged as we will be providing refreshments - https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/bradfordlibraries or speak to library staff who will be happy to sign you up.

Bag Your Irish Escape

Hi

For us here in Ireland, November means bright, frosty walks, the honking of geese, and evenings warmed by whiskey and traditional music. As an in-country team, we know how special every season is and how to make the most of each one.

We love sharing Ireland with others all year round, which is why every one of our trips goes far beyond typical sightseeing. We work closely with small, independent businesses — family-run inns, wildlife experts and long-standing boat operators — who add warmth, character and local knowledge to every step of the journey.

With our Black Friday Promotion now live, there’s no better time to plan your next adventure. Whether you love travelling in the fresh bloom of spring or in the golden days of summer, make sure to book your 2026 trip before the 2nd of December and claim your free Eagle Creek rolling duffel, worth €170.

No matter the season, Ireland has many wonderful experiences up its emerald, Guinness-dipped sleeve.

If you're planning a festive trip to York this year and want something a little more magical than your usual wander through the Christmas Market, let me share a brilliant hidden gem you might not have come across… the York Christmas Walking Tour.

This tour is such a wholesome and surprisingly fascinating way to step into York’s festive history, from Roman Saturnalia mischief, Viking midwinter parties, right through to Georgian feasts and Victorian traditions.

You’ll stroll through York’s twinkling streets as your guide shares the very first Christmas celebration ever held in Britain (in 521 AD!), which famous Victorian author gifted us Boxing Day, and even the curious tale of how Rudolph got his red nose. 🎅🦌

It’s charming, cosy, wonderfully atmospheric, and a brilliant alternative to the usual festive activities - especially now the city is lit up for the season. If you’re visiting York this Christmas, it’s such a lovely way to start the celebrations.

🎁 Exclusive Discount for You

If you download the Get Your Guide app using the link below and use code GETLOSTINYORKSHIRE5, you’ll save 5% on your ticket.
