Our top picks

This month we asked our Principal Music Officer, Katie Pearce, what she's most looking forward to hearing this season. Katie says:

"My top pick is Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music which Temporal Harmonies Inc will play in their concert in January. It’s such a fun piece incorporating ragtime, Viennese, gypsy, and jazz influences, with a beautiful paraphrase of a Chassidic melody in the second movement. A fantastic toe-tapping piece to end the concert with a bang!"

Step inside Nisbet Road Tailor Shop, a beautiful new installation created for Bradford 2025 by Zain Ali – designer, artist and founder of the ZN ALI fashion label.

Nisbet Road Tailor Shop is an immersive recreation of South Asian tailors from a time when thousands of people moved to Bradford from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Out of these tailor’s shops and textiles stores emerged a new type of style rooted in British Asian culture – sourced from famous outlets such as Bombay Stores, archival pieces from Bradford’s Museums and Galleries, as well as original textile installations by the designer. The show is a tribute to Bradford’s diverse story as we know it today, told through the story of textiles and a curation of family photographs taken at Manningham’s Belle Vue Studio.

Created by one of the most exciting new voices in British fashion, Nisbet Road Tailor Shop pays homage to these treasured icons – with archival images, memorabilia, textiles, garments and much more.

We Are Still ASAFO

We Are Still ASAFO

Date: 7-9 Nov 2025 | Times: 7.30pm & 2.30pm | Location: Loading Bay | Tickets: £12 & £5 for Youth Pass holders

We Are Still ASAFO is a tribute to those who came before us – and a reminder that their voices still echo in the present. Drawing on West African, Caribbean, and diasporic narratives, it speaks to our roots and our futures, to resilience in places where we are too often made to feel unwelcome.

At its heart are three characters, living in Bradford, Ghana, and Jamaica. Each is facing loss, each standing at a crossroads. As they navigate grief and upheaval, they are guided by ancestral voices that refuse to be silenced – voices that carry memory, courage, and direction through turbulent times.

Blending dance, theatre, and music, We Are Still ASAFO explores what holds us together, rather than what tears us apart. It is about finding connection across oceans and generations, about community as resistance, and about hope as an inheritance we carry forward.

City of Culture BD2025 Living Library Event

Living Library

City of Culture BD2025 Living Library event:

We are pleased to announce our forthcoming Living Library event to celebrate the City of Culture 2025.
The theme will be: "What libraries mean to me"

Many of the city's libraries will be taking part, each hosting their own events during November 2025.

Bradford College - Tues 11 Nov, 12.00-14.00
University of Bradford - Weds 12 Nov, 12:00-14:00
Commonweal Collection - Thurs 13 Nov, 12.30-15:00
Bradford City Library - Fri 14 Nov, 14:00-16:00

We are delighted you are interested in attending the BD2025 Living Library.

The Living Library stems from a Danish Human Library instead of borrowing a book to read a story, you 'borrow' a person instead. The idea is that stereotypes can be challenged when hearing stories from real people.

Living Library books are people from our community in Bradford who will share a personal experience or perspective on life. Borrow a living book in a safe space and take the opportunity to have a conversation and learn more about their experience.

Are you interested in being a reader and listen to what Libraries mean to others?

Why be a Reader?
‘Borrow’ a Living Book in a safe space and take the unique opportunity to have an open, respectful conversation to hear more about the personal life experience of the Living Book. Listen, talk, and learn.

City Library would like to invite you to be a a Reader at our Living Library event where you will have the opportunity to hear from Books sharing their stories about 'what libraries mean to me'

How will the Living Library work?
There may be up to 3 other Readers with your Book.
Your Book will start by talking about what Libraries mean to them. Please listen respectfully.
You can then ask your Book questions about their story. Please ask questions that are based on what the Book has said.
Please remember that a Book has the option not to answer a question.
There will be two 30 minute sessions: one session at 2pm and one session at 3pm. Readers are requested to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the session.

And the whole world is indigo.

I don’t know how close you are, how far.

WIN a festive trip to Castle Howard!

Weekly Escape

Hey

The 5th of November is here… and you probably know what that means: bonfires, fireworks, toffee apples, and people peering into the night sky wrapped in scarves and mittens.

But did you know that Bonfire Night has strong ties to Yorkshire?

The infamous Guy Fawkes, the man at the centre of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, was actually born right here in York, on Stonegate. His childhood stomping grounds stretched from the cobbled streets of the city centre to the sleepy village of Scotton, near Harrogate - and you can still trace his footsteps there today.

From the Guy Fawkes Inn in York to the Guy Fawkes Arms pub in Scotton, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate the night his name became legend… although probably not in the way he’d hoped. 😅

🔥 Whether you're planning to mark the occasion with a roaring bonfire, a dazzling fireworks display, or just a cosy pub dinner by candlelight, there are plenty of ways to celebrate here in Yorkshire.

I’ve got a round up the best Bonfire Night events across the county, including displays happening tonight and throughout the weekend.

Until our next adventure,

P.S. Fancy something different? The blog also includes a few ideas for pubs and places linked to Guy Fawkes himself, in case you’re planning a future trip!
