'Don't Let's Ask For The Moon...':

Nocturnes and Atkinson Grimshaw

Until 19 April 2026

John Atkinson Grimshaw's moonlight works from the 1880s brought the Leeds artist success and recognition, even from the crusading modernist American artist James McNeill Whistler.

This new exhibition provides fresh viewpoints to expand our understanding of Atkinson Grimshaw's nocturnes. Including perennial favourites such as Iris as well as more recent acquisition, Reflections on the Aire - on strike, the exhibition reflects on his work beyond our familiarity of it as a painted, lost Victorian world.

Alongside evocative images of nocturnal themes by four contemporary painters - Elizabeth Magill, Selma Makela, Judith Tucker and Joanna Whittle - and neon and photographic works by Roger Palmer, Atkinson Grimshaw can be seen here as a painter of modernity, possessed of a powerful poetry.

Plant Dreaming

Until 19 April 2026

Plant Dreaming encourages us to think about different types of plant knowledge, and how they relate to ecopolitics and the self. The show explores a number of imaginative, alternative perspectives on plants, fungi and our interconnected planet.

Featuring works by artists including Emma Talbot, Yan Wang Preston, SHARP and Jane Lawson, Plant Dreaming uses artforms including textile, ceramic, photography and film to invite audiences to imagine what humans could learn from plants, rather than how they can be used or exploited.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of talks and events, starting with Indexed Beings, on Tuesday 2 December.
