Videodrome

Cronenberg Double Bill: Videodrome (18)

Friday 31 October, 20.45

When he acquires a different kind of show for his station, a sleazy cable-TV programmer sees his life and the future of media spin out of control.

Stunningly realised by Oscar-winning makeup effects artist Rick Baker, the film has been praised by Cronenberg contemporaries John Carpenter (“he’s better than all of us combined!”) and Martin Scorsese (“no one makes films like he does”). Videodrome was Cronenberg’s most mature work to date and still stands as one of his greatest.

Berberian Sound Studio

BIFA Presents: Berberian Sound Studio (15)

Sunday 2 November, 17.00

In 1976, a timid sound engineer (Toby Jones) arrives in Italy to work on a mysterious horror film, mixing bloodcurdling screams with the grotesque sounds of hacked vegetables. But as the on-screen violence seeps into his consciousness, reality and fantasy become blurred in nightmarish ways.

Daringly original and masterfully constructed, this inspired homage to 70s Giallo horror is a devastating assault on the eyes, ears and brain - drawing comparisons with the films of David Lynch and being hailed as a modern cult masterpiece from Peter Strickland.

Throughout 2026, we’re celebrating 75 years of the Southbank Centre with a vibrant programme of events and exhibitions that look to the future.

In 1951, the Royal Festival Hall was opened as part of the Festival of Britain, designed to deliver a message of hope after World War II. Welcome Home

For many visitors, travelling to Ireland is more than ticking off landmarks; it’s about coming home.

With millions around the world tracing their roots back to this island, trips here often carry a special meaning: a chance to walk the same paths, hear the same music and see the same landscapes that once shaped generations past.

Whether or not you know the exact region your ancestors came from, travelling through Ireland offers a sense of connection that goes beyond records and family trees. It’s found in the warmth of a welcome, the lilt of a fiddle and the windswept beauty of the coast.

This is more than a vacation — it’s a journey into the heart of Ireland, and perhaps, into a deeper part of yourself.

Weekly Escape

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect excuse to climb one of Yorkshire’s most iconic landmarks…this is it!

After years of bad timing and missed dates, I finally got the chance to climb Wainhouse Tower in Halifax at the weekend - and it was every bit as epic as I’d hoped!

Standing at 77 metres tall, Wainhouse Tower is the tallest folly in the world. Originally built as a chimney (but never used as one), it’s now a soaring observatory with 369 steps to a panoramic viewing gallery. And the views from the top? Truly unforgettable.

Even though we braved the only rainstorm of the day, we still managed to spot Emley Moor Mast, Stoodley Pike, and miles of rolling Yorkshire countryside. And honestly, I think the dramatic weather made it even more memorable!

This was a rare opportunity - the tower is only open to the public on select dates, and this year marks its 150th anniversary, so they’ve added some extra Heritage Open Day sessions. But the final one is coming up fast…

🗓️ Final open date: Saturday 20th September
🎟️ Booking is essential - no walk-ins on the day!
💰 Free to visit!
📍 Wainhouse Tower, Halifax
💡 Optional: You can even get a printed “Ascent Certificate” to mark your climb!

If you’ve ever looked up at the tower and thought “one day…” - let that day be now.

(And maybe pack a raincoat just in case 😉)

Until our next adventure,
