This autumn we have our program of talks, tours, and workshops made with grown-ups in mind.
Maybe you want to discover the history of our city, spark your love for learning again, or you're planning on a unique date night to impress someone special. Delve into Leeds history with our topical talks, join a gentle guided tour around our newest exhibitions, or take some contemplative walks around our spectacular sites.
Forget awkward silences, at the Discovery Centre, there’s always something to talk about. With over a million objects in our vast store room, your guided tour uncovers the incredible stories behind some of the most fascinating treasures. Just thinking about it has us feeling swept off our feet already!
Join Stephanie Davies, Lotherton’s Community Curator, to learn about the lives of the Gascoigne children, how they lived and how this changed over 200 years from Sir Thomas 1745 to Yvonne Gascoigne 1919. Followed by tea in the servants’ rooms with the curator.
Let our expert tour guides lead you through Lynette Yiadom-Boakye's personal journey through art past and present. This exhibition works with an eclectic range of other historical and contemporary artists, illuminating their creative process.
Come and share your stories, and listen to others, about our favourite city. This week it's all about transport! Have a memorable bus route that you still take? Have things changed for better or worse? Whatever your story, come and share your history in this free session.
Join the Curator of Dress and Textiles at Lotherton for a talk exploring the clothes and styles women have worn during pregnancy across the centuries.
This will be a relaxed, informal talk and babes in arms are welcome. The talk will be followed by tea in the servants’ rooms with the curator.

🔎 SPECIAL EVENT: The BFI National Archive's restoration of Silent Sherlock screens With Live Music
Before Benedict Cumberbatch, or even Basil Rathbone there was Eille Norwood, who holds the record for playing Sherlock Holmes most times on film and whose performance was acclaimed by Arthur Conan Doyle himself.
We're delighted to be screening a trio of Norwood's classic Sherlock Holmes films, newly restored by the BFI's National Archive and showing for the first time since the world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in 2024.
To make this rare screening even more special there'll be live music from pianist Neil Brand - dubbed "the country's greatest silent movie score composer" by Mark Kermode - and drummer Jeff Davenport, with an introduction from Bryony Dixon, Curator of Silent Film at BFI National Archive, who will reveal the secrets behind this grand restoration project.
If you love archive film, silent cinema, Sherlock Holmes or live musicians working their magic then it's elementary – this is the one-night-only screening for you.
Keep scrolling to learn more of the restoration, check out some clips from the BFI and learn more about the musicians providing a dazzling soundtrack to this silent spectacle.

An Audience with Nigel Planer Young Once LIVE 24 Sep - 05 Oct Nigel Planer, beloved as Neil the hippy from The Young Ones and a founding figure of the 80s alternative comedy scene, brings his memoir Young Once to life in a warm, sharply funny live show of storytelling. Full of dry wit, theatrical flair, and a knack for finding humour in both disaster and triumph, don’t miss the once-young Nigel as he offers a wildly entertaining and gloriously sideways glimpse into his quietly remarkable career, in a show that is part performance, part confession, and all heart. |

Spellbinding art awaits
Next year, journey into the immersive worlds of two leading creators in contemporary Asian art – all with one ticket – as they take over the Hayward Gallery.
Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota transforms the gallery with her iconic thread installations – vast, weblike structures that stretch from floor to ceiling, creating a hauntingly atmospheric experience.
Meanwhile, Chinese artist Yin Xiuzhen presents powerful multimedia works that use secondhand clothing, concrete and everyday objects to explore memory, identity and the traces of lived experience.
