Weekly news update - Friday, 13 MarchBudget 2026/27 This week, Full Council met to set the budget for the coming year. It protects frontline services and makes substantial savings of £60m – putting the Council on a more stable financial footing for the future. It also starts to reinvest in services that really matter to our residents such as tackling fly-tipping, reducing charges for bulky waste collections and more money for our youth service. The 4.99% council tax rise is in line with the majority of councils across the country. It means Bradford’s council tax remains lower than the average for metropolitan district councils and it includes 2% ringfenced for vital adult social care services. Bradford schoolgirls involved in Active Bradford event A group of schoolgirls from Bradford had an extra spring in their step on International Women’s Day, after helping launch a new partnership between the Sweaty Betty Foundation and the ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign. Around 25 girls from Westbourne Primary School and Atlas Primary School joined a fun Active Bradford session at Manningham Sports Centre this week, where the Sweaty Betty Foundation, in partnership with Saucony, handed out free pairs of trainers to help the joy of movement become part of participants' daily lives. The theme of this year’s IWD was ‘Give to Gain’ - and collaboration, generosity and long-term investment are absolutely vital when it comes to breaking down the barriers that make it too hard for too many young girls to access the benefits of exercise and sport. This week’s event with Active Bradford marked the start of a wider rollout that will see up to 200 free pairs of trainers donated to girls across the five focus areas featured in the ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign. Join Bradford Teaching Hospitals on Instagram Bradford Teaching Hospitals recently joined Instagram to explore new ways to connect with staff, patients, partners and the wider community. Hard hitting gambling harms campaign to launch in Bradford next week A major new public-health campaign is rolling out across Bradford this month, aiming to educate 18-34 year olds about the risks of gambling through highlighting real-life stories of harm. This pioneering "If Only I Knew" campaign aims to increase understanding of the causes of gambling-related harms, reduce stigma and encourage young men in Bradford to seek information and support earlier. It is led by Chapter One, a gambling related harm service, as well as on our social media channels. Through the lens of people with lived experience, the campaign highlights how the commercial factors of modern-day gambling can affect mental health and relationships. These honest, relatable stories give people the facts while also showing that it’s never too late to take a positive step. This campaign also supports the recently published UK Government’s Men’s Health Strategy, which identifies young men as a key audience for addressing gambling harms and promoting early intervention. |
