With thanks to Hannah of Get Lost Yorkshire:
HeyThis week, I want to share one of Yorkshire's strangest hidden gems. Hidden away in a peaceful woodland in Nidderdale is what looks like an ancient stone circle, complete with towering standing stones, mysterious archways, a sacrificial altar and even a tomb. At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd stumbled across Yorkshire's answer to Stonehenge. But here's the twist... It's not ancient at all. The Druid's Temple was actually built as a Victorian folly in the early 1800s by local landowner William Danby. During a period when Britain was fascinated by Druidism, he created this extraordinary landmark deep in the woods - and according to local legend, even hired a hermit to live there! When I visited I absolutely loved it. The temple itself is fascinating, but the surrounding woodland makes the whole experience feel like you've wandered into a fantasy novel. As well as exploring the stone circle itself, you can: It's one of those places that somehow manages to be peaceful, mysterious and a little bit magical all at once. I've put together a complete guide covering the history, how to find it, where to park, the best walking routes and a few tips I wish I'd known before visiting (including one very important item to pack if you don't want to be eaten alive by insects!). 👉 Read the full guide here and see why I think The Druid's Temple deserves a place on every Yorkshire bucket list. If you do visit, I'd love to know whether you think it feels more like a hidden ancient monument or the setting for a fantasy film! Until our next adventure, P.S. One of my favourite discoveries was learning that the temple isn't the only thing hidden in the woods. There's a friendly Rock Troll waiting for visitors to leave him a stone...and I've shared exactly where to find him in the guide! 🪨👀 Yorkshire Events What's on in Yorkshire this weekend? Here's a glimpse of what's on in Yorkshire this weekend 👀 West Yorkshire: The Leeds 'Hidden Gems' Food Tour runs every Saturday this month, walking you through six independent food spots in the city centre with generous tastings, a coffee stop, and stories of Leeds' culinary past along the way. Hi June marks Pride Month, which is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. Our collection includes the works of the noted nineteenth century Lancashire dialect writer Margaret Rebecca Lahee. Margaret concealed that she was both Irish and a woman, although she wrote in the female perspective. She was also in a loving relationship with Susannah Rothwell Wild for over thirty years. Her work is fascinating and her story highlights the importance of the ongoing fight for equality. Read on for more stories from the collections, find out about our upcoming events, and learn how to join our Patrons Scheme to help preserve Chetham's Library. |

The Mummified Cat in the Library Roof |
As our theme 'Lost and found' has come to an end we thought we would share one of the Library's more unique lost and found stories. Over the years, the medieval buildings that now house Chetham’s Library and parts of Chetham’s School of Music have undergone numerous repairs and refurbishments, unearthing new discoveries. It was during renovations to the buildings during the late twentieth century that one of the more eccentric and—to some—spooky objects found to date was uncovered. While completing work on the school’s new library, which today occupies the space where the boys’ dormitories once stood (see photo) during the days of Humphrey Chetham’s hospital school (a charitable school for boys from poor backgrounds), one of the workmen came across a mummified cat in the rafters! Looking into the folklore and spiritual beliefs of our predecessors can give us insight into why a cat was placed in the roof to begin with. Before continuing readers are advised that this post contains a photograph of a mummified cat and rat which they may find distressing. |

One collection. Endless reasons to explore.
Renowned forager Tom Radford leads you along the Devon coastline on 23rd June, uncovering wild ingredients, sharing the stories the landscape has to tell, and ending with a dining experience that tells the story of everything found.
On 30th June, Tom turns his attention to Calcot & Spa's 220 acres of rewilded grounds, hedgerow herbs, wildflowers, edible leaves, and foraged fruits, all on the menu before the menu even exists. It's The Cotswolds at it's best.
A stage, a summer evening, and something worth dressing up for. We’re talking acclaimed tribute acts and live entertainment under the lights in one of Britain's most enchanting outdoor settings.
Good food. Great company. Live music. The Montagu Arms invites you to settle in for an afternoon of seasonal grazing plates, flowing cocktails and summer sounds. They’ve done everything except reserve your table, that part's on you.
50 years of warm welcomes and riverside Dorset charm, and what better excuse to book that stay. Spend a lazy afternoon by the river, soak up the gardens, and raise a glass to 50 years of hospitality done properly. Half a century well spent.
25 years in the making, and still one of the most extraordinary spa retreats in Britain. Mark the occasion with a visit to the legendary Serenity Spa, and remind yourself why Seaham Hall has been worth talking about for so long. Here's to the next 25.
130 years of Devonshire family hospitality, and the south coast's most enduring address shows no sign of slowing down. This summer, they're raising a glass to the milestone, and you're very welcome to join them.
15 years of Cotswold charm, and a glorious garden party to match. Join Ellenborough Park on Sunday, 19th July to mark the occasion in proper celebratory style.
Celebrate aboard the floating boutique hotel, Fingal and the legendary Royal Yacht Britannia. Marking 100 years since the birth of Queen Elizabeth II, you're in for elegant cabins, exceptional dining, and a setting fit for a centenary.
Forty years of exceptional hospitality, and Sopwell House is celebrating in proper style.
