Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, Monday 1 June 2026

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 1 June 2026 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library with Barbara, Karen and new member Vlada in attendance, Paul, Molly and Reuben having passed on their apologies.

The members introduced themselves to Vlada and everyone discussed their writing history. Vlada has written short stories and script writing for school; she is in Year 12 at North Halifax Grammar. One of her assignments was to rewrite the script of The Moon Goddess and direct it, plus some poetry. For her Gold Arts Award she has 4 units and has chosen to develop short stories and writing as an art form. She is interested in Journalism and had to try out a club as part of her course, hence joining CWG because she enjoys reading and sport is not her thing.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen entered two of the I Am in Print competitions (there are 12 fee paying categories in total) and the Bath Novel Award (£33 fee). She has been working on a MS appraisal for a client of her own business Creative Services Yorkshire (a psychological thriller novel scheduled for release in Autumn) and written a synopsis for her current WIP Touchdown. Barbara has rewritten chapter one of her WIP and started chapter two.

Creative Writing competitions, events and workshops: Larrikin House have a one day open submission day today (1 June) for children's writing, including picture books. Anna Chilvers has a sale on her MS appraisal work. Kate Nash has a first novel competition, enter by 5 June. Times Chicken House has its open submission coming up for a fee and there are upcoming workshops as part of Bradford Literature Festival. Karen has booked on a couple taking place at Shipley Library: How to Writer a Killer Thriller and Writing As a Brand with Lucy Brighton.

Writing Plans: Karen will finish the MS appraisal and enter the Kate Nash writing competition. She will enter some writing into the one day open submission day for Larrikin House (today) with her picture book and if there is time, she hopes to work on some writing. Barbara will prepare a cast list for her WIP and continue chapter two. Vlada will start the writing challenge.

Feedback Sessions: Karen shared the synopsis to her WIP which was well received. Members thought there was enough conflict and it was believable. Because of the dementia angle to the story, Barbara told members about a set of twins with early onset dementia whose mum appeared on Look North or Calendar News. They are running 30 marathons in 30 days as they have a rare form, which the boys have but their sister does not.

Barbara shared her first chapter. Vlada thought there were a lot of characters but they were different which helped her to follow along. There was a lot of dialogue so doesn't need descriptive, and she likes it. Karen noticed some minor editing points but loved the humour. She suggested adding a few dialogue tags and a more dramatic ending to the chapter.

It was agreed that Vlada will go first in the feedback sessions at the next meeting.

Writing Challenge: June theme - Summer of Sport.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 15 June at 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome.

Please feel free to contact Karen via this blog or her email karen.naylor.csy@outlook.com if you are interested in attending CWG or wish to know more about Creative Services Yorkshire.

Dear Reader,

Not to make you feel bad or anything, but tomorrow I'll be spending the day volunteering to paint, garden and tidy up a primary school in Barnes. Both my children are coming with me – and they can't wait. It's the perfect family day out, really. I'll pack a picnic, the sun will be shining and we'll bask in our generosity and skip all the way home together. Don't worry, we are not that good or nice. There is an ulterior motive. For turning up and putting in a few hours hard graft, my daughter and I are getting tickets to Harry Styles. How on earth does that work, I hear you cry. Well, let me introduce you to Earnt, a platform rewriting the rules of reward. It's so clever in that it connects brands with causes, and rewards those who show up and do good. Their events are always oversubscribed because, as you can see, the rewards can be truly 'money can't buy'. I mean, who wouldn't paint a playground for Harry? Pitch perfect.

READ: The 2026 Women’s Prize Winners

Last night, a glittering ceremony crowned two new winners of the Women’s Prize. Brilliant BBC broadcaster Lyse Doucet bagged the fledgling Non-Fiction prize in its third ever edition with her narrative non-fiction debut, The Finest Hotel in Kabul, which gives a people-centric history of Afghanistan’s turbulence in modern times, with the Inter-Continental Hotel Kabul at its heart. You can read more about Lyse and her book here. Over in fiction, debut American author Virginia Evans won the 31st Women’s Prize for Fiction with her word-of-mouth hit The Correspondent, a story told through letters penned by 73-year-old Sybil Van Antwerp to friends, family and real-life authors as she faces the twilight of her life. You can read more about Virginia and The Correspondent here. Both beat out stellar Shortlists to bag the honour – as well as the £30,000 prize and a statuette. Both books are out now: The Finest Hotel in Kabul, hardback, £25The Correspondent, paperback, £9.99.

MAKE: Honey & Co’s Summer Dirty Rice

A group of London restaurants and delis, Honey & Co has become one of London’s most beloved spots for vibrant Middle Eastern food since opening its first outpost in 2012. Their latest cookbook, Honey & Co Daily, features dishes that taste delicious but don’t take all day to prepare – drawing on the menu served at the Sloane Street cafe. Try one out below.

Serves 4.

Ingredients:

  • 300g/10½ oz raw cooking chorizo, diced into large cubes

  • 2 red onions, peeled and cut in large dice (about 200g/7oz)

  • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and halved

  • 8 large sage leaves, roughly chopped

  • 1 red chilli, sliced (use less if the chorizo is spicy)

  • 360g/13oz mixed seasonal tomatoes, large ones diced, small ones halved

  • 1 small bunch of coriander (cilantro), roughly chopped (about 20g/¾oz)

  • 2 tsp flaky sea salt (kosher salt) plenty of freshly ground black pepper

  • 250g/9oz baldo, bomba or other paella rice

  • 30g/1oz capers

  • 350ml/12fl oz boiling water

Method:

  1. Heat a large deep skillet or wide saucepan on a low heat and add the chorizo without any oil. Cook for about 7–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, so the oil starts to come out of the chorizo cubes and they colour all over.

  2. Add the onions, garlic, sage and chilli and fry for 2 minutes.

  3. Stir in the chopped mixed tomatoes, coriander, salt and pepper, cover the pan and simmer for 12 minutes, stirring a couple of times, until some of the tomato pieces have collapsed a little.

  4. Add the rice and capers and stir well to coat. Pour over the boiling water, cover the pan and cook on a low heat for 12 minutes.

  5. Turn the heat off, but don’t move the pan or uncover for another 12 minutes.

  6. Finally uncover, fluff up the rice and serve.

Honey & Co Daily is out now, published by Quadrille.

With thanks to Hannah of Get Lost Yorkshire:

Weekly Escape

Hey

This week, I want to share one of Yorkshire's strangest hidden gems.

Hidden away in a peaceful woodland in Nidderdale is what looks like an ancient stone circle, complete with towering standing stones, mysterious archways, a sacrificial altar and even a tomb.

At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd stumbled across Yorkshire's answer to Stonehenge.

But here's the twist...

It's not ancient at all.

The Druid's Temple was actually built as a Victorian folly in the early 1800s by local landowner William Danby. During a period when Britain was fascinated by Druidism, he created this extraordinary landmark deep in the woods - and according to local legend, even hired a hermit to live there!

When I visited I absolutely loved it. The temple itself is fascinating, but the surrounding woodland makes the whole experience feel like you've wandered into a fantasy novel.

As well as exploring the stone circle itself, you can:
🌲 Wander peaceful woodland trails.
🪨 Discover unusual rock formations.
👹 Leave a stone for the woodland Rock Troll.
🌄 Climb to viewpoints overlooking the Swinton Estate and Leighton Reservoir.

It's one of those places that somehow manages to be peaceful, mysterious and a little bit magical all at once.

I've put together a complete guide covering the history, how to find it, where to park, the best walking routes and a few tips I wish I'd known before visiting (including one very important item to pack if you don't want to be eaten alive by insects!).

👉 Read the full guide here and see why I think The Druid's Temple deserves a place on every Yorkshire bucket list.

If you do visit, I'd love to know whether you think it feels more like a hidden ancient monument or the setting for a fantasy film!

Until our next adventure,

P.S. One of my favourite discoveries was learning that the temple isn't the only thing hidden in the woods. There's a friendly Rock Troll waiting for visitors to leave him a stone...and I've shared exactly where to find him in the guide! 🪨👀
