Meanwhile, with National Apprenticeship Week approaching, there are still spaces for members to attend our apprenticeship workshop, and London Book Fair has confirmed Joanna Trollope and Jacqueline Wilson as its Authors of the Day. We are reviewing our newsletters to make sure that they best suit the needs of our readers. PA & INDUSTRY NEWS Publishing APPG call for evidence The All Party Parliamentary Group for Publishing, for which the PA holds the secretariat, has launched a call for evidence into how to maintain a world-leading publishing industry. The call for evidence will look into the economic, cultural and social benefits that publishing brings to the UK. It is inviting written evidence on a number of areas relating to the industry, including the impact of Brexit on the publishing industry, the biggest and emerging export markets for publishing and how publishers can address the challenges in improving literacy and accessibility to books. World Book Day This year's World Book Day is taking place next week on Thursday 1 March and will encourage parents to start taking at least 10 minutes out of their day to read with their children. We would love you to get involved and encourage your staff to join in to help spread this and other key messages throughout your business. Please send your updates of any planned corporate Share a Story activity and celebrations to Kirsten Grant. As part of the scheduled activity for the day, World Book Day will be sharing a bedtime story live via Facebook at 7pm, featuring Roald Dahl's Giant Bugs retelling of James and the Giant Peach. Apprenticeship Workshop With National Apprenticeship Week approaching on 5 - 9 March, why not celebrate by attending our Apprenticeship Workshop? The workshop will be delivered by HR experts and will arm you with everything you need to know about the forthcoming Publishing Assistant Apprenticeship Standard. It will cover the levy, the apprenticeship system and the training and assessment programme. Speakers include Creative and Cultural Skills' Sara Whybrew, Hachette's Dominic Mahony and Publishing Training Centre's Peter Mckay. The workshop will run from 3-5pm and is free to members. If you would like to attend please email us. IPA Congress The PA attended the International Publishers Congress in New Delhi last week where the focus was on copyright, freedom to publish, and the role of the big tech companies in the content value chain. The theme of this year's event, which was attended by delegates from across the world, was 'When Innovation Meets Experience'. Speaking at the Congress, Richard Charkin, Bloomsbury's CEO stressed the importance of educating the biggest tech companies about the importance of copyright. Meanwhile, Louise Adler, President of the Australian Publishers Association, said publishers needed to better explain why creators warrant remuneration and why "free is not fair". London Book Fair Joanna Trollope and Jacqueline Wilson will be attending the London Book Fair this year as Authors of the Day, and will appear alongside David Baldacci, who will join as a special guest. The Author of the Day programme aims to showcase the work of and celebrate the achievements of the most acclaimed and successful London writers. Joanna Trollope will feature as trade author of the day on 10 April and Jacqueline Wilson will appear as children's author of the day on 12 April. Also at LBF, the PA will be putting on three seminars: one on publishing after Brexit, another on the apprenticeship scheme and the third on accessibility. More details here.
